A modern disposable vape pen almost always has a rechargeable battery, which is an important feature considering how expensive vape oil can be. You wouldn’t want a disposable vape to die before you have a chance to use all of the oil, and having a rechargeable battery ensures that won’t happen. You can continue recharging the battery over and over until you’ve used every drop.
You definitely want to be sure that you know what you’re doing when you use a vape with a rechargeable battery, though – and understanding the correct charging procedure is a big part of that.
So, how long do you charge a disposable vape pen?
Most disposable vapes charge in about 30 minutes, and you can watch your device’s indicator light to know when it’s done charging.
If you want to know even more than that, though, this is the guide for you. We’re going to explain everything you’ve ever wanted to know about charging a disposable vape pen.

How Do You Charge a Disposable Vape Pen?
To charge a disposable vape pen, connect it to your computer with a USB cable. When the vape starts charging, its indicator light should turn on.
Some disposable vapes require micro-USB cables, and others use USB-C. It’s rare for a disposable vape to actually include a charging cable, though, because including a cable would make the device more expensive. You most likely have a compatible cable around the house.
How Long Does a Disposable Vape Pen Take to Charge?
A disposable vape pen usually takes about a half hour to charge.
You can get the exact answer to that question, though, if you know the device’s battery capacity and charging speed. Here’s how it works.
- The battery capacity of a vaping device is measured in milliamp-hours or mAh. A typical disposable vape pen has a battery capacity of around 500 mAh.
- A battery’s maximum charging rate is measured in amps. A charging rate of 1 amp is typical. At a charging rate of 1 amp, 1,000 mAh of battery capacity is restored in one hour.
Knowing those two things, you only need to perform a little basic math to determine how long your disposable vape should take to charge.
- Assuming a charging rate of 1 amp, a battery with a capacity of 500 mAh should charge in about a half hour because 500 mAh is 50 percent of 1,000 mAh. A battery with a capacity of 360 mAh, on the other hand, should charge in about 22 minutes.
- Some disposable vape pens may charge at rates slower or faster than 1 amp. Compared to a 1-amp charging rate, a 0.5-amp rate will take twice as long. A 2-amp charging rate, on the other hand, will take half as long.
Note that although you can roughly calculate how long a disposable vape takes to charge using the formulas above, it’s normal for the actual charging time to be a little longer in practice because the charging rate will often drop to a slow trickle when the battery is almost full. Luckily, you don’t need to watch your device like a hawk because it’ll know when it’s done charging. We’ll explain that next.
How Do You Know When a Disposable Vape Pen Is Done Charging?
Watch the indicator light to know when a disposable vape pen is fully charged.
A disposable vape has an intelligent charging circuit that monitors the battery’s voltage and stops the charging process when the battery is full. So, although it’s helpful to have an idea of how long it should take for your vape to charge, you don’t actually have to watch a timer and disconnect the device immediately when it’s done charging.
When a disposable vape charges, the indicator light turns on. When charging is complete, the light will change in one of three ways.
- The light may pulse on and off during charging and go solid when charging is complete.
- The light may turn on during charging and turn off when charging is complete.
- The light may be one color during charging and change to a different color – from red to green, for instance – when charging is complete.
Although the device should always discontinue the charging process automatically when the battery is full, we still recommend the following for maximum safety.
- Always charge a vaping device when you’re present and not when you’re out of the house or sleeping.
- Disconnect the device from the charger when you notice that it’s done charging.
- Don’t charge a disposable vape pen with a “fast charge” adapter for a mobile phone, computer or tablet.
What to Do if a Disposable Vape Pen Isn’t Charging
Do you have a disposable vape pen with a light that’s not turning on when you connect the charging cable? This symptom means that the device isn’t charging. Before you begin troubleshooting, you should try using the vape. It’s possible that the battery is already fully charged. If it doesn’t work, try these three things.
- Try charging your disposable vape with a different USB cable. The most common reason why a vape doesn’t charge is because the cable is simply worn out.
- Try connecting your disposable vape to a different USB port. It’s usually best to charge a vaping device with your computer because you can always be confident that the computer will choose the maximum safe charging rate. If you use a wall adapter, make sure that the adapter uses the correct voltage and amperage for your disposable vape.
- Make sure that your disposable vape’s charging port is clean. When you carry a vaping device in your pocket, the charging port is bound to gather dust and pocket lint. If anything is blocking the port and preventing it from working properly, remove it with a toothpick.
